Phases

This sustained investigation represents me coming to terms with my femininity. While growing up, I idolized my twin bother and wanted to be exactly like him, which meant avoiding any stereotypically feminine traits: like wearing my hair down, wearing dresses, and having my ears pierced. I feared being rejected by him and our male friends if I looked "girly", which persisted until I was 14 years old: when I finally got my ears pierced. Since then, the way I express myself through my earring arrangements has contributed to my sense of confidence and beauty. Throughout these works, I use motifs of the moon for feminine energy and its phases representing change over time. The moths also represent beauty, since stereotypically butterflies are considered more beautiful and moths are their uglier counterparts, but in reality, moths are pretty in their own way even though they look different. In addition, I use bold contrasting colors to highlight an internal conflict. As a college student now, these insecurities are not completely gone, but I have learned through this investigation that how I express myself should be for my own happiness, not for the approval of others.
